About the creator

Charles Balthazar Julien Févret de Saint-Mémin was a French portrait painter. Saint-Mémin created numerous portraits after moving to the United States during the French Revolution. Subjects included Founding Fathers such as George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, as well as Indigenous leaders such as Pawhuska (Chief of the Great Osage) and Sheheke (Chief of the Mandans). He created a portrait of his father in 1796, which is now held by the National Portrait Gallery.

Account by Févret de Saint-Mémin of travels with his son through parts of Europe, England, Canada, and New York between March 27 and October 26, 1793.
