Julia Newberry portrait, 1875, by George P.A. Healy. Newberry Library

Julia Newberry

1853-1876

Gilded Age Chicago heiress

About the creator

Daughter of Chicago shipping magnate Walter Loomis Newberry, Julia kept a diary during her teenage years, chronicling her life among America's wealthiest circles. Over time, however, the entries, once filled with stories of exclusive boarding schools, fortune-hunting suitors, and vacations abroad, began to focus on the illnesses that plagued both Julia and her sister Mary. After their early deaths, the Newberry family line came to an end, and their father’s estate was bequeathed to establish the Newberry Library.

About the collection
