- About the creator
José Rizal was a revolutionary leader for Spanish recognition of Filipino civil rights and representation in the Spanish legislature. Rizal’s outspokenness and leadership singled him out for suspicion; he was implicated in the more radical arm of Philippine nationalism, the Katipunan, whose leaders initiated political revolt against Spain in 1896. Rizal was arrested and executed by the Spanish in December 1896. By his death Rizal became a national symbol of Philippine independence.
